Pakistan has been experiencing slow internet speeds for quite some time now, leaving many frustrated and wondering what's causing the issue. Recently, an official from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) shed light on the matter, revealing that the reason behind the slow internet is not a firewall, as many had speculated.
According to the official, Pakistan's primary cause of slow internet speeds is the country's reliance on a single undersea cable, the South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 4 (SEA-ME-WE 4) cable, for international connectivity. This cable has limited bandwidth capacity, which needs to be improved to meet the growing demand for internet usage in Pakistan.
Other factors contributing to slow internet speeds include:
1. Limited Infrastructure: Pakistan's internet infrastructure is less developed than other countries, leading to slower speeds and more frequent outages.
2. High Demand: The number of internet users in Pakistan has increased significantly, putting pressure on the existing infrastructure and causing slower speeds.
3. Network Congestion: The lack of adequate peering and transit agreements between internet service providers (ISPs) leads to network congestion, resulting in slower speeds.
4. Maintenance Issues: Regular maintenance and upgradation of the SEA-ME-WE 4 cable have been neglected, further reducing its bandwidth capacity.
The PTA official emphasized that efforts are underway to address these issues, including:
1. Upgrading Infrastructure: Expanding and upgrading Pakistan's internet infrastructure to increase bandwidth capacity.
2. Diversifying Connectivity: Establishing connections with additional undersea cables to reduce reliance on the SEA-ME-WE 4 cable.
3. Improving Peering and Transit: Enhancing agreements between ISPs to reduce network congestion.
4. Regular Maintenance: Ensuring regular maintenance and upgradation of the SEA-ME-WE 4 cable.
While these efforts aim to improve internet speeds in Pakistan, it may take some time to notice significant changes. In the meantime, users can explore alternative solutions, such as using local internet service providers or optimizing their internet usage habits.
